Home brewing is a great new hobby, but many individuals think it is difficult and expensive to do. In this course, students will discover how easy and fun it is to make beer at home in their kitchen. We will talk about the different types of malts, hops, and other basic ingredients in making beer. There will be a discussion of basic equipment used in home brewing, followed by a discussion of the difference between all grain and extract brewing. In the second meeting, we will use a basic commercially available extract beer kit to brew beer in class. Students will be active participants in this process. In the third meeting, there will be a discussion about the necessity for basic sanitation of brewing equipment. There will also be a discussion on the importance of record keeping. Students will practice the art of filling bottles and learning how to correctly “cap” a beer bottle. At the fourth and final class, we will demonstrate how to prepare the fermented beer for bottling and assist the students as they fill and cap bottles of beer. Each student will be able to take home a couple of bottles of the beer that they made in class.
